When we went back in August it was all business....no company....and lots of working. One of the days I went with Cub to Hilo via the Saddle Road and it was such a beautiful day (not raining) that I made him stop several times to take pictures. In September the new Saddle Road opened which shortens the trip by 15 minutes, at least, and takes out all the curves, bumps, and one lane bridges on the Kona side. What is SO amazing on this hour drive is the variation and changes in the landscape and climate zones. So, here is a quick tour of the Saddle Road from the Kona side of the island to the Hilo side.

Had to stop and check out the wild turkeys....quite a flock. |
|
Up on top....dry and volcanic. |
|
Things start suddenly greening up....fern forests. |
|
Heading down the Hilo side....still a bit curvy and bumpy but very green! |

Hilo in the distance. |

Orchids all along the side of the road. |
Then, of course, on our way from Hilo to the job we had to stop once again at Laupahoehoe viewpoint.

On one of Cub's trips from Hilo to Waikoloa in the evening he saw these wild burros. There used to be alot more of them but they have gathered them and adopted alot of them out. There is still quite a group that hang out around Waikoloa Village by some watering troughs if you are lucky enough to see them. They call them Nightingales. |
